Product Description: Waveplates are made from birefringent materials such as quartz crystal and magnesium fluoride with the optic axis in the surface plane. When a linearly polarized beam enters a waveplate, the linearly polarized beam is resolved into components projected along the fast axis and the slow axis. The two components experience a relative phase retardation which is given by:
where d is the thickness of the waveplate; no and ne are the refractive indices of o-ray and e-ray; λ is the wavelength.
When phase retardation is a nonzero value, the waveplate transforms polarizations from one state to another. The thickness of a true zero order λ/2 phase retardation quartz waveplate in the visible spectrum is around 25 µm. True zero-order waveplates in comparison to low-order waveplates are much less sensitive to temperature or wavelength variation. However, handling is difficult for such thin components. One solution is to bond with a glass substrate to provide enough mechanical strength. But the epoxy in the optical path would lower the high power damage threshold to around 10MW/cm^2.
